Almost all students at Franklin will take an AP (Advanced Placement) course during their time at Franklin. AP teacher take additional training; course design matches College Board standards and most colleges and universities across the nation.

AP tests are scored on a scale 1-5 Many colleges and universities award college credit for scores that are a 3 or above (credit depends on the institution). One value of taking an AP course is that it demonstrates to colleges and universities that your student is taking a challenging, nationally recognized course of study, which looks great on their transcript when applying to colleges and scholarships. While colleges look at the fact that your student has taken an AP course when determining acceptance, scores on the AP test are not factored in to a college or university’s decision- test scores are only used to award credit or placement after a student has been accepted.

What does this mean- this mean’s that there is no academic downside to taking an AP test- only the potential award.

Now AP tests do cost money, which can be a significant barrier, especially if your students is taking multiple tests. Franklin is able to subsidize these test for families that need support (one of the many reasons we ask that you fill out the application for school meals- this is one way we pay for this!); so please don’t let the price be the thing that stops your child from taking the test. If your student needs support in paying for these tests, please contact Mr. Jeffries, our test coordinator and he can help.
